I remember being a kid, lost in an imaginary Pokémon battle with my buddy during recess. We were so caught up, we missed the bell.
Then, we’re surrounded by bigger kids and realize — oh snap, we’re late!
That mad dash to class, hearts pounding… It got me thinking about how our minds can play tricks on us.
The power of belief is no joke. It can change how we see everything around us.
Self-Fulfilling Excuse
Remember that time you faked being sick to get out of something? And then suddenly, your stomach actually started churning?
“The mind is everything. What you think you become.” — Buddha
Our brains are like sponges, soaking up whatever we feed them. If you tell yourself you’re sick often enough, don’t be surprised if your body starts to believe it.
When you’re feeling down, try convincing yourself you’re excited instead.
Subjective Reasoning
Stuck in traffic, blood boiling at the ‘idiot’ drivers around you?
I used to be that guy. Then I realized something — I was choosing to be angry.
“The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.” — William James
Think about it. We can justify almost anything to ourselves if we try hard enough.
Slow driver ahead? Instead of fuming, I started imagining they were having a rough day. Maybe they just got bad news.
It’s all about perspective. You have the power to choose how you interpret the world around you.
The Inception Effect
Remember that movie where they plant ideas in people’s dreams? Turns out, we do that to ourselves all the time.
I once convinced myself I was furious about slow drivers just to stay awake on a long road trip. It worked like a charm.
“Your mind will answer most questions if you learn to relax and wait for the answer.” — William S. Burrough
The trick is realizing you have a choice in how you think about everything. And I mean everything.
Got a big presentation coming up? Instead of dreading it, tell yourself it’s an opportunity to shine. Your mind will start looking for ways to make that true.
“This sounds too good to be true. How can simply changing my thoughts change my reality?”
Fair question. But ask yourself this — what have you got to lose by trying?
