I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become
What if instead of just surviving each day, you could actually live it?
I know, I know. Easier said than done, I’ve been there. Stuck in that hamster wheel, feeling like life was happening to me instead of for me. (Technically you can say I am still stuck, we all are, that’s the beauty)
Now, I’m not saying I’ve got it all figured out, far from it. But I’ve learned a thing or two about grabbing life by the horns instead of letting it drag you around.
Know Thyself (No, Really)
First things first: You gotta know who you are. Not just your name and job title. I’m talking about the real you, deep down.
“The unexamined life is not worth living.” — Socrates
Old Socrates was onto something there.
Take a minute. Ask yourself:
What lights you up inside?
What values do you hold dear?
What kind of life do you actually want?
Scary questions, right? But answering them is the first step to living on purpose.
Tune Out the Noise
We’re bombarded with messages 24/7.
Buy this! Do that! Be like them!
It’s enough to make your head spin.
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson
Listen to your own voice for a change.
What do you want? Not what your parents, friends, or society expects. What makes your soul sing?
If you can answer that, you might be on the path to the happiest person ever.
Face Your Fears (It’s The Way You Think)
Here’s the thing about fear: It’s usually more bark than bite.
Most of what we’re afraid of? It’s all in our heads.
“Everything you want is on the other side of fear.” — Jack Canfield
I’m not saying ignore your fears. Feel ’em. Acknowledge ’em. Then do the thing anyway.
Start small. Maybe it’s striking up a conversation with a stranger. Or try that dance class you’ve been eyeing.
Each time you face a fear, you grow a little stronger. A little braver.
Accept the Suck (It’s Part of the Deal)
Life ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes it downright sucks.
Bad stuff happens. People let you down. Plans fall through.
“The problem is not the problem. The problem is your attitude about the problem.” — Captain Jack Sparrow
Yeah, I just quoted a fictional pirate (I bet you loved that quote). But the dude’s got a point.
You can’t control everything that happens to you. But you
Next time life throws you a curveball, take a breath. Remember: This too shall pass.
Live in the Now (It’s All We’ve Got)
How much time do you spend reliving the past or worrying about the future?
Meanwhile, life’s passing you by.
“The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly.” — Buddha
Easier said than done, I know. But it’s worth practicing.
Next time you’re eating, really taste your food. When you’re with friends, be fully there. Notice the little things — a warm breeze, a child’s laugh.
That’s living, my friend.
Move Your Body (It’ll Thank You)
You know exercise is good for you. But it’s not just about looking good in jeans.
Moving your body changes your brain. It boosts your mood, energy, and creativity. (you all know that)
“To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.” — Buddha
Find something you enjoy. Maybe it’s hiking, dancing, or chasing your dog around the park.
Just move. Your body (and mind) will thank you.
Create Something (Anything)
We’re all creative beings. Yes, even you.
Maybe you’re not the next Picasso. So what? Creating isn’t about being the best. It’s about expressing yourself.
“The creative adult is the child who survived.” — Ursula K. Le Guin
Draw. Write. Sing. Cook. Build. Whatever floats your boat.
Creating something, anything lights you up from the inside. It reminds you that you’re alive.
Connect (We’re Not Meant to Go It Alone)
Humans are social creatures. We need connection like we need air.
“The greatest thing in life is to love and be loved.” — Victor Hugo
Reach out to an old friend. Have a real conversation with your partner. Volunteer in your community.
Real connections nourish your soul. They remind you that you’re not alone in this crazy world.
Generally, the sad people are the alone people.
Practice Gratitude (329th time reading this?)
It’s easy to focus on what’s wrong. But what about all that’s right?
“Gratitude turns what we have into enough.” — Aesop
Try this: Every night, write down three things you’re grateful for. Big or small.
A warm bed. A good laugh. A cup of coffee.
Gratitude shifts your focus from what you lack to what you have. It’s simple, but powerful.
Keep Growing
Life’s not about reaching some magical endpoint where everything’s perfect.
“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” — Pablo Picasso
Never stop learning. Try new things. Push your boundaries.
You’ve got gifts to share with the world. But first, you gotta discover them.
So, there you have it. A roadmap to living life instead of just reacting to it.
