This one would give you 7. Ichigo Ichie (一期一会) is a beautiful and profound Japanese phrase that translates roughly as: One time, one meeting”

or“This encounter is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

I enjoyed it.I am up at 3:43 AM. They’re not Go back to sleep. I have an appointment in the a.m. sunrise time. but the part that got me because I’m so beating myself up over it. Was the quote.

Self-help hoarding doesn’t count as growth 🙃 i’ve wasted time and spent some wasted Apple Pay on many programs apps, and the like that say they could help me with my focus my productivity, my ADHD you know they all had a little quiz and in the middle of taking a quiz that is designed to give them the information which would result in a personalized program just for me and so now I don’t just declutter by straightening the pens and the scattered piles across the desk I unsubscribe I cancel at that time not anytime estimation of about $1000 spent on such but no more for me and because of you and your post, it is Kaizen for me I actually had incorporated something to that effect in my workouts three chin ups one day led to 4 the next I can do 12 now thank you sir🤗

Japanese has hundreds of these Yoji-jukugo “4-character idioms” that look simple but have deeper meanings.

A couple of years ago I was embroidering a Japanese book which included several of these concepts. So wise and enough!

I am including in my list the concept of Naikan, the practice of gratitude.

Thank you , Marilyn

If only Basho were to visit Tokyo now, he might develop a different view of crows. They're so numerous, aggressive, and LOUD. (I know this from 15 sponsorships to Tokyo for VOICE.)

Yet I love that Basho poem, Singh Bhai, and thank you for the entire post.

This post felt like a warm cup of matcha and a quiet walk through the fog—something in me just exhaled. I’ve read about these concepts before, but you gave them edges, warmth, and humor that made them land differently. Wabi-sabi especially hit home… maybe the mess is the art. Thank you for this.

Let’s keep making the world A Little Bit Kinder. 🌱

Love all of this, can look to make use of a lot of it, and I am especially guilty of this (except swap notes in for pens):

Definitely interested in ikigai in my own life, glad the Japanese have a word for it.

Thanks for the insight into Japanese thought; I've lived in Okinawa (not Japan but close) and gotten very into zen Buddhism in recent years.

They may sometimes do this to a fault, like the British can be polite to a fault, but a country full of people trying their hardest to get along and respect everyone around them sounds SO GOOD right now.

Any thoughts on visiting Japan in the current year?
